Robathan family
« on: January 13, 2013, 02:00:27 PM »
After a great success in using this forum to trace one side of the family I am hoping to find  information now about the Robathans.
Elsie Robathan , my husband's grandmother, was the daughter of Willam and Louisa Robathan. William was born in 1875 at 16 Broughton St. Aston B'ham.  He became a jeweller and specialised in ring making. His father was Charles Robathan 1845-1898 who married an Irish girl called Mary Moran. They lived at Well St and then 16 Broughton St. They had two sons William and Charles. He was also a jeweller and specialised in coloured gold. What I would love to find out is if my relations are related to the Robathan jewellers who have a shop in Birmingham, also if the silver makers hall mark I have found has anything to do with them.
Thanks to anyone who can help.

Hi! I can't quite work out which cousin's wife you are, but hi!  (Is it Barbara I'm writing to?)I've done quite a bit of research and our great grandparents actually had 4 boys as well as two girls. As there are so many of them I haven't managed to track them all -yet.
I'd love to know more about the Charles seniors parents as I've seen conflicting information.
There is a goldsmith's archive one can write to, I guess we should try that route.
Regards, Nonsuch

The Robathan company was founded by Charles Robathan b 1874, he traded under the name C Robathan and sons from 1908, they specialised in silverware , known for Spoons for special occasions such as Weddings and Jubilees etc.

Charles married Mary Holmes at St George Birmingham in 1894 age 20 his father given as William, Marys father given as Edwin holmes.

In 1911 they lived in Bridge Street Hockley, with 5 daughters and sons Charles henry  age 12 and William Arthur age 3.

Charles died in 1956 and probate was granted to William Arthur Robathan and Raymond Oswald  Robathan , Silversmiths.
